39. Saathiya (2002) — A “companion” piece to Chalte Chalte, though of course this one came first. I like it more — not as much shouting and has an easy-going freshness. I was so wrapped up in its going-ons that genuine surprise greeted SRK’s appearance (wonderfully muted and solemn). Mani Ratnam’s storytelling skills are such that you are drawn into his web irresistably in the beginning, fear for your sanity in the middle and attain a better understanding of the possibilities of life and the imagination in the end.
