Veer-Zaara (2004): Running on empty

21. Veer-Zaara (2004) — I am running out of Bollywood! Help! Watched this the day before, but wanted some time to digest the proceedings. On the surface, this seems like a typical Yash Chopra movie, with the de rigeur styles of entrances, exits and even love. I think its quality lies in the details, the lovingly rendered, subtly presented details of lives led by sundered souls, on the individual and national scale. Just how much of it is based in reality, I have no idea, but romanticising something can make you reach towards a better truth than you have now. What can movies do to change the world?

  1. Gosh, you’ve exhausted my top 20 already. Now I can only recommend the ones that are one notch lower. Can try ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ though I think it was my age at that time which made me fall in love with this movie about friendship and love. I think you may like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’. Very colourful movie, and Madhuri looks drop dead gorgeous!

  2. For those notch-lower movies, I might actually sign up with Video Ezy. Why doesn’t the NLB have more Hindi movies, is what I wanna know! Am embarking on crazy cleaning of room very soon, so may not surface for some time. Wish me well. And yes — I would love to start on the Bollywood classics!
